Picture this: It’s 2:30pm. You’re hunched over your computer. Minutes start feeling like hours. Simple tasks start to feel laborious. That’s when you know the dreaded afternoon drain has struck yet again.

So what do you do? You can chug another cup of coffee, but that could end in jitters, a massive crash, or even a headache. You could get up and take an energizing walk- but let’s face it, sometimes you’re just too busy to leave the office before 5pm.

Thankfully, Roman Focus is a nootropic supplement that contains ingredients that can give you the pick-me-up you need during work, at the gym, or anywhere you want to concentrate. Nootropics are substances that claim to support cognitive functions and brain health, and Roman went out of their way to develop a proprietary formula of science-backed ingredients.

We sat down with one of Roman’s in-house doctors to learn more about nootropics, the science behind their formula, and what we all can do to have more sustained energy throughout the day.

Why do people tend to lose energy in the afternoon?
Often described as the “afternoon slump,” the feeling of having decreased energy and difficulty focusing in the afternoon seems to be a fairly common experience. It tends to occur around 1–4 PM. There are many factors that can contribute to it. These include sleep, diet, stress, as well as lack of exercise. In addition to these external contributors, it is interesting to note that our body’s circadian rhythm (the sleep-wake cycle that your body naturally follows) typically makes us sleepy around mid-afternoon (the siesta does have a biological basis!). It’s best to optimize lifestyle factors such as sleeping enough, eating healthily, and getting exercise so as not to add to this natural circadian effect.

Can you explain more about what qualifies as a nootropic?
Nootropic is a term used to identify a class of substances that are said to improve mental functions such as cognition, memory, creativity, motivation, learning, focus, and intelligence. Within this class of substances are prescription medications such as the stimulant Adderall (used to treat attention disorders) as well as non-prescription supplements which do not treat diseases but do contain various natural and/or synthetic ingredients that are said to support cognitive functions and long term brain health.

Walk us through some of the ingredients in Roman Focus. What makes it special?
The Roman Focus supplement is a mix of 8 individual ingredients including bacopa monnieri, American ginseng, alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (alpha GPC), L-theanine, caffeine, niacin, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. Roman chose these ingredients because each has been shown in some studies, either individually or in combination with another, to promote certain cognitive functions and/or to be an important nutrient for brain health. These cognitive functions include calm energy, alertness, sustained focus, concentration, and memory. Of particular note is the combination of caffeine with L-theanine. It promotes what’s often described as a calm energy that’s not associated with jitters*.
